Common Ground Semi-Regular Social - February 8

Event Date:
February 8, 2014 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm
From Common Ground

In 1861 on February 8th, a Cheyenne delegation and some Arapaho leaders accepted a new settlement (Treaty of Fort Wise) with the US Federal government. The deal ceded most of their land but secured a 600-square mile reservation and annuity payments.

Land has always driven political events, and economic ones, too. Now it rewards speculation and sprawl. Redirecting that value is how we can motivate efficient use of land, especially metropolitan land, generating widespread prosperity while sustaining our nurturing ecosystem. Redirecting land value, by shifting taxes off wages, enterprises, and buildings, onto the socially-generataed value of locations, is an idea enthusing some young activists -- see the media firestorm ignited by Rolling Stone: http://www.progress.org/views/good-press/6-articles-sprout-fallout-rolling-stone-piece/ -- and is the mission of our group.

Common Ground OR-WA is having our semi-regular social next month at my house, 1137 NE Beech St., #1, Portland, from 4-6pm on Feb. 8. We'd like to invite you and yours to come meet us. It's a long shot with the timing of the Oregon legislature, but we've also invited Sen. Chip Shields, who sponsored SJR 16 in the 2013 legislative session.
