Health Outcomes

Where a person lives can encourage – or inhibit – good health. Is the air clean? Is healthful food available in nearby stores? Are neighborhoods built in a way that encourages physical activity? Health outcomes and disease rates can be affected directly by neighborhood conditions such as exposure to air toxins, and indirectly by conditions that either influence or deter behaviors that have health consequences.

The Health Outcomes Map Series explores how health outcomes vary geographically across the Portland metro region. The series includes maps examining how the distribution of key health outcomes such as obesity and diabetes relates to the presence of neighborhood conditions that promote healthy eating and active living. It also includes maps exploring how the distribution of diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compares with the region’s demographic patterns, and what this might tell us about regional health disparities.
