RTP Intro
An Opportunity to Rebalance the System
- Shift the Balance on Transportation: Coalition for a Livable Future's Analysis of the 2035 RTP Update and RTP Report Executive Summary
- News Articles on the Regional Transportation Plan
Metro’s Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) is the 20-year blueprint that guides investment in the region’s transportation system. Metro began a major update to the RTP in 2007, and approved the final plan in June 2010.
CLF was involved since the
beginning of the update, helping Metro refine the goals and objectives of the
RTP’s new policy framework. Metro integrated nearly three quarters of
CLF’s recommendations into the federal component of the update, including key
policy goals for addressing climate change, creating affordable
housing near public transportation, creating opportunities for healthy and
active living, and addressing equity and environmental justice issues. CLF also highlighted weaknesses in the public
process, helping Metro identify and address process problems.
While we’ve made some smart transportation investments in recent years, there is still a long way to go to rebalance the system. With a million new residents expected to live in the region in 25 years and shrinking transportation resources, the stakes are very high to make wise decisions. The RTP Update provides a unique opportunity to redirect our transportation investments so that we create real choices for people and move toward balance in our transportation system.
