Know a bad development deal when you see one?
Most of us have seen this kind of formula before. That is why Coalition for a Livable Future opposes development on West Hayden Island, the region's largest unprotected wildlife habitat.
CLF member, Audubon Society of Portland, is leading the charge against a dangerous proposal to convert a third of this natural gem from development by the Port of Portland. Here's a snippet of key issues:
* A more thoughtful proposal could lead to job opportunities that reach communities most in need of job opportunities. As it stands now the Port of Portland has failed to explore how to gain through efficient use at existing facilities or collaboration with Port of Vancouver. Good jobs can be created through good planning and equitable development.
* Hayden Island Livability Project also opposes development on West Hayden Island
* Development in an undeveloped area automatically commits public funds for infrastructure either now or in the not too distant future. What areas of Portland that currently need those dollars will have to forgo funding that gets committed by default to supporting public infrastructure on West Hayden Island, if development there proceeds?
* One way to honor the victims of the Vanport flood would be to relate to the flood plain for what it is. Building an industrial site in areas that flood regularly is an invitation for disaster.
* Why displace wildlife or increase stress on salmon and ecosystems already struggling for environmental health?
