For decades we have held on to a hope. A hope that the legacy we leave our children is one of health, sustainability, and equity. Today, in the midst of unprecedented crises, that hope is stronger than ever. There is a sense that we stand on the cusp of realizing the dream.
Our nation’s economic meltdown is the starkest reflection that the way we did business in the 20th century no longer works. People across the region, nation, and globe are clamoring for a new path, for change they can believe in. Achieving the dream requires systems thinking and collaboration. Achieving the dream requires inclusion and accountability. These are the things that underpin CLF’s Regional Equity Action Agenda – a blueprint for increasing equality in our region as we strive for a sustainable future (read more about the agenda at www.equityatlas.org).
There has never been a more important time for diverse leaders in the region to gather -- to learn from and work with each other. To achieve our collective agenda for change we must design and implement 21st century solutions. Solutions that are inclusive of all members of community, solutions that tackle root causes of our problems, solutions that bring forth the dream of health, sustainability, and equity. We must employ our collective wisdom, talent, and passion to ensure that the hope of this moment translates into the legacy of the movement.

Opening Keynote by Julian Agyeman
"Toward a Just Sustainability?"
From London to Australia to the US, Julian has been a government advisor, academic, and activist. Currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University, Agyeman was co-founder of the Black Environment Network, the first environmental justice-based organization of its kind in Britain. He is a co-founder and co-editor of Local Environment: The International Journal of Justice and Sustainability and has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of the Arts. For 6 years, he ran a consulting firm in London which specialized in communicating environmental and sustainable solutions to local governments, non-profits and businesses. With degrees in botany, geography, conservation policy and environmental education, Julian adeptly navigates the intersection of environment and society, expanding our thinking about the possibilities for a just sustainability.
